What Is Taurine? What It Does, and What the Evidence Says — engraved illustration

Taurine is the ingredient on the energy drink can that nobody can explain, which has let two opposite stories grow around it: that it is a stimulant, and that it is bull urine. It is neither. It is one of the most abundant free amino acids in your body, your own cells make it, and the honest account of what it does is more interesting than either myth.

Here is what taurine is, where the evidence for it is real, where it is not, and why it is in our formula.

What taurine actually is

An amino acid — technically an amino sulfonic acid — that your body synthesises from cysteine and methionine, mostly in the liver. Unlike the amino acids you usually hear about, it is not built into proteins. It floats free, and it floats free in remarkable quantity: taurine is among the most abundant free amino acids in the heart, brain, retina and skeletal muscle.

The name comes from Bos taurus, the ox, because it was first isolated from ox bile in 1827. That is the entire basis of the bull-urine story. Commercial taurine is made synthetically and has never been near an animal.

Conditionally essential — an amino acid your body can make, but not always enough of. For taurine the clear cases are premature infants, who cannot synthesise it well, and cats, who cannot make it at all. For healthy adults, synthesis plus diet is almost always enough.

Where it comes from in food

Meat, seafood and dairy. Shellfish and dark poultry meat are the richest sources. A typical omnivorous diet supplies somewhere around 40–400mg a day; a vegan diet supplies almost none, and vegans do measure lower plasma taurine, though without any established harm from it. Plants essentially do not contain it.

An energy drink, for scale, typically contains around 750–1,000mg per can — several times a day's dietary intake in one serving.

What it does in the body

This is the part that is settled, and it is genuinely wide-ranging.

  • Bile salts. Taurine is conjugated to bile acids so they can emulsify dietary fat. This is its oldest known job and the reason it was found in bile.
  • Cell volume. It is an osmolyte — cells move it in and out to hold their water balance under osmotic stress. This is why it is concentrated in tissues that cannot afford to swell or shrink, like the brain and retina.
  • Calcium handling in heart and muscle. Taurine modulates how cells take up and release calcium, which is the switch for contraction.
  • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory chemistry. It neutralises hypochlorous acid, a reactive product of immune cells, forming a compound that is much less damaging.
  • Nervous system. It acts as an inhibitory neuromodulator, in the same broad family as GABA and glycine — which is the opposite of a stimulant.

A comprehensive review in Biomolecules & Therapeutics walks through each of these mechanisms. Every one is real cell biology. None of them, on its own, tells you what happens when a healthy adult swallows a gram.

The evidence for taking it, by claim

Exercise performance — modest and real. The best synthesis is a meta-analysis of ten trials in Sports Medicine: a single oral dose of 1–6g improved endurance performance with a small-to-moderate effect size (Hedges' g = 0.40), and taking it for up to two weeks was no better than taking it once. A 2021 review covering strength, recovery and metabolic outcomes was more cautious: findings are limited and varied, with the most promising protocols spread across days rather than a single dose. Read together: a small endurance effect is the best-supported claim, and it is not large.

Blood pressure — one good trial, at a drug-like dose. A randomised, placebo-controlled trial in Hypertension gave 1.6g a day for twelve weeks to people with prehypertension and found a meaningful reduction in blood pressure and improved vascular function. It is a well-run study and it is the reason taurine turns up in cardiovascular research. It is also a dose no drink mix provides, in a population under medical monitoring, and nothing about it is a claim we make for our product.

Energy — no. Taurine does not make you alert. The alertness in an energy drink is the caffeine and, to a lesser degree, the sugar. Taurine's action in the nervous system is inhibitory. The reason it is in the can is history — the original Red Bull formulation included it — and the reason it stayed is that nobody had a reason to take it out.

Longevity — the story that ran ahead of the data. In 2023, a high-profile paper in Science reported that circulating taurine declines with age in mice, monkeys and humans, and that supplementing mice extended their lifespan by 10–12%. It made headlines. In 2025 the same journal published a much larger longitudinal analysis from the National Institute on Aging, following humans aged 26 to 100, rhesus monkeys and mice over time. Taurine did not decline with age; it rose or held steady, and differences between individuals were larger than any age trend. The NIH's own summary is blunt: taurine is unlikely to be a useful ageing biomarker, and there is no solid clinical data that supplementing it benefits humans. If you bought taurine to live longer, that is where the evidence currently stands.

Hangovers — nothing. No controlled human trial. Some animal work on alcohol and liver chemistry, none of which is evidence about a person's morning.

Dose and safety

This is the clean part of taurine's record.

The European Food Safety Authority reviewed taurine in energy drinks in 2009 and found no safety concern at regular consumption, with a no-observed-adverse-effect level of 1,000mg per kilogram of body weight per day — around forty times what one to two cans a day delivers. A widely cited safety review puts the observed safe level for long-term supplementation at 3g a day, and trial doses up to 6g have been used short-term without notable side effects.

Two cautions. The problems attributed to energy drinks — palpitations, sleep disruption, the crash — are caffeine and sugar problems, and taurine gets blamed by proximity. And if you have kidney disease, are pregnant, or take medication for blood pressure or heart rhythm, a gram-a-day supplement is a question for your doctor, because those are the systems taurine touches.

Why taurine is in Snake Oil

Two reasons, and neither is the energy-drink reason.

The first is its role in cell water balance and calcium handling in muscle — an amino acid concentrated in exactly the tissues that a long night or a long effort stresses, put back alongside the electrolytes that govern the same balance. The second is that alongside zinc it rounds out the metabolic support side of the formula, next to the glutamine-led amino acid blend.† It is not the biggest thing in the stick and we do not sell it as such.
