About the Product

What is Snake Oil exactly?

Snake Oil is a recovery support drink, formulated as a powder you mix with water. Each stick is a single serving — about 16 oz once mixed. It's designed to help your body do what it's already trying to do after demanding nights, hard workouts, long weeks, or any morning that hits harder than usual: rehydrate, replenish, and recover.† We're not an energy drink. We're not a wellness supplement. We're not a daily multivitamin. We're a recovery formula built for adults who need to keep showing up.

Who is Snake Oil for?

Adults who play hard, work hard, or both. Specifically: people who have demanding social schedules, demanding work schedules, demanding training schedules — or all three. Our typical customer is someone who refuses to lose a day to a rough morning that started the night before, or a week that ran too long, or a Tuesday that feels like a Friday. If you read ingredient panels before you read marketing copy, you'll like Snake Oil. If you don't read panels but you trust people who do, we hope we earn that trust.

How is Snake Oil different from other recovery products?

Three real differences:

  1. Glutamine is the foundation of our formula. Most recovery products lead with DHM or electrolytes. We built the formula around glutamine — the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue — at a clinically meaningful dose. The rest of the formula supports what glutamine starts.
  2. We don't ignore joint and gut tissue. We include N-acetyl glucosamine — and we pay more to source ours from plants instead of shellfish, so anyone with a shellfish allergy can still use the product.
  3. We use natural flavors and natural colors. No Red 40, Yellow 5, or Blue 1. The only thing artificial in the formula is a small amount of sucralose for sweetness — just enough that you'll actually drink it.
Will it actually work for me?

It might. Bodies are different. The ingredients are grounded in research, the doses are real, and most people who try it tell us they feel a meaningful difference. But we won't tell you it'll work like magic for every person every time. If it works for you, you'll know. If it doesn't, we have a 30-day return policy.

Ingredients & Safety

How much caffeine is in Snake Oil?

100mg per stick — about the same as a single cup of brewed coffee. The caffeine is there for the same reason any recovery formula includes it: a moderate, sustained lift that pairs cleanly with the B-vitamins and electrolytes doing the actual restoration work. It's not a pre-workout dose and it's not an energy-drink dose. If you're caffeine-sensitive, take Snake Oil earlier in the day or pair it with food. If you're already loading caffeine from coffee or energy drinks, Snake Oil is a swap rather than a stack — same caffeine, more behind it. If you avoid caffeine entirely, Snake Oil isn't the right product for you.

What's in the proprietary blend?

Every ingredient. The proprietary blend on the supplement facts panel is listed in descending order of abundance — the most-used ingredient is at the top, the least-used at the bottom. We don't hide what's in the formula; we just don't publish the specific milligram ratios because the ratios are the formula. The blend exists to protect formulation IP from competitors, not to hide ingredients from customers.

Is Snake Oil vegan?

Yes. Including the N-acetyl glucosamine, which is the ingredient that often makes recovery and joint products non-vegan (most NAG is sourced from shellfish). Ours is fermented from plant sources.

Are there any allergens I should know about?

Snake Oil is dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and shellfish-free. We don't include common allergens. If you have specific sensitivities, the full ingredient list is on every product page and on every package. If something we use is on your sensitivity list, please don't use the product.

Do you have a sugar-free version?

Not yet. We're working on it — the formula's tricky because the sugars in Snake Oil aren't there for flavor, they're carrying part of the absorption mechanism. Glucose helps move some of the active ingredients across the gut wall faster, which is part of why you feel a stick within twenty minutes instead of an hour. A sugar-free version means re-engineering the delivery system, not just swapping in a sweetener. That's the project.

When we crack it, subscribers will hear about it first.

I'm on prescription medication. Can I take Snake Oil safely?

For specific medications, we recommend asking your doctor first — that's the right call for any supplement. The ingredients in Snake Oil are common in recovery and electrolyte products (electrolytes, amino acids, B-vitamins, botanicals) and don't typically interact with prescription medications, but your doctor knows your situation better than we do.†

The two ingredients most worth flagging in a doctor conversation are the caffeine (100mg per stick, equivalent to a cup of coffee — worth mentioning if you're on anything that interacts with stimulants) and the milk thistle extract (which can affect how the liver metabolizes certain drugs). Both are at moderate doses, both are well-studied, but both are reasonable to mention. For most over-the-counter and common prescription medications, Snake Oil is compatible. We just won't be the ones to confirm that for your specific case.

If you're pregnant, nursing, or under 18, we'd ask you not to use the product.

Has Snake Oil been evaluated or approved by the FDA?

No — and neither has any other dietary supplement you've ever bought. That's not a dodge; it's how the category works. The FDA approves drugs, which are products that claim to treat or cure a medical condition. Dietary supplements operate under a different framework (the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994), where the manufacturer is responsible for making sure the product is safe and the label is honest, and the FDA steps in if something goes wrong rather than approving products up front.

What that means for you: every claim we make is carefully worded because we're legally required to be honest, not because we're hiding anything. We can tell you what's in the formula and what each ingredient does in your body. We can't tell you Snake Oil "cures" anything, because no supplement legally can, and anyone who tells you otherwise is the actual snake oil.†

Will Snake Oil show up on a drug test?

Snake Oil is made from ingredients common to recovery and electrolyte products — amino acids, electrolytes, B-vitamins, and botanicals like milk thistle. None of these are controlled substances or banned stimulants, and none are on the standard panels most employment or athletic drug tests screen for.

That said, we can't make guarantees about every test, because we don't control what any given lab screens for or how sensitive their thresholds are. The one ingredient worth knowing about is caffeine (100mg per stick, about a cup of coffee) — caffeine isn't screened on standard drug panels, but some competitive athletic organizations monitor caffeine at high concentrations. One stick is nowhere near those thresholds, but if you compete at a level where you're subject to anti-doping rules, check your organization's banned-substance list against our full ingredient panel before using any supplement, ours included.

If you're being tested for employment, Snake Oil's ingredients aren't what those tests look for.†

Why does Snake Oil say it "supports" recovery instead of just saying it works?

Because words have legal meaning in this category, and we'd rather use the honest ones. Dietary supplements are allowed to make "structure/function" claims — statements about how an ingredient supports a normal function of the body (like "supports hydration" or "helps your body recover"). Supplements are not allowed to make "disease" claims — statements that a product treats, cures, or prevents a medical condition. That line is the difference between a supplement and an unapproved drug, and crossing it is both illegal and dishonest.

So when you see us write "supports recovery" or "helps your body do what it's already trying to do," that's not marketing weasel-wording — it's us staying on the right side of a line we take seriously. The formula does real things, backed by real ingredients at real doses. We just describe those things the way an honest company is supposed to.

The dagger you see throughout the site (†) points to the standard disclosure: these statements haven't been evaluated by the FDA, and the product isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Every supplement company is required to say it. We mean it.†

Usage & Timing

How quickly does Snake Oil work?

Most people start feeling the difference in about twenty minutes — which is when the electrolytes, B-vitamins, and amino acids start hitting your bloodstream. Full effect usually lands by the thirty-to-forty-five minute mark. The proverb on the back of every pouch puts it well: "The best time to take Snake Oil was twenty minutes ago. The second best time is now."

When should I take it?

Whenever you need to reset: before or after a hard workout, before a long day, after a rough night, or strategically before bed. The formula doesn't care when — it works whenever you drink it. Many users take it preemptively, before activity they know will be demanding — a workout, a long flight, a high-pressure work day. Strategic users take a stick before bed to front-load recovery while they sleep. Pragmatic users take it in the morning when they realize they need it. Some users do both on rougher mornings.†

How often can I take it?

One stick per day is the dose the formula is designed around. The B-vitamin levels are intentionally high because they're water-soluble (your body uses what it needs and excretes the rest), so daily use is fine. Skip days when you don't need it.

Can I take more than one stick?

Most people don't need to — one stick is calibrated to be a full serving. If you're having a particularly demanding day (long flight, marathon training day, etc.) and want to double up, you can, but watch the caffeine — two sticks is 200mg, which is a lot for some people. Listen to your body.

Can I dilute it in more water, or make it more concentrated?

Yes, both directions work. The 16 oz mix is what we recommend, but the formula is flexible:

  • More water — pour a stick into a 32 oz tumbler if you want to sip it over a gym session or stretch it across a longer activity. John (one of the founders) does this regularly. Lighter taste, same recovery support.
  • Less water — concentrate it down to as little as 4 oz if you want to shoot it. Warning: at 4 oz, Salacious Punch actually punches. You'll feel it. Some people love that, some people regret it. You decide.

The active ingredients work the same regardless of how much water you mix them with. The 16 oz recommendation is about taste and hydration — not chemistry.

I often hit an afternoon slump around 1-2pm and have a coffee. Is this good for a mid-day crash?

Yes. Snake Oil is built for whenever your system gets pushed past its limits and needs to recover — workouts, hikes, long office days, swing-shift work, golf rounds, swim sessions, the school pickup after a 12-hour day, whatever's draining you that afternoon. A 1pm slump is exactly that, just on a smaller scale: blood sugar dipping, hydration off, brain running on whatever's left after a busy morning. Mix a stick into 20 oz of water around the time the wall hits you. You'll feel it within twenty minutes, and it won't crash you the way caffeine plus sugar will at 5pm — the 100mg of caffeine is enough to lift you without spiking you, and the electrolytes and B-vitamins do the actual restoration work.†

If you already run on coffee or energy drinks through the afternoon, Snake Oil is a swap rather than a stack — same caffeine, more behind it, no crash on the back end.

My kid has been up all night and I'm exhausted. Will this help?

Of course it will. Sleep deprivation is the same physiological problem as a hard night — your body's depleted of the things it needs to function, and you're running on willpower. Snake Oil restores what's missing: electrolytes for the dehydration that comes with a broken night, B-vitamins for the metabolic energy your body normally rebuilds during sleep, amino acids for everything else. It won't replace the sleep you didn't get, but it'll get you through the day with the kid still in one piece. (Both of you.)

A lot of our customers are parents — newborn weeks, toddler fevers, teenager-coming-home-late nights. The formula doesn't care why you didn't sleep. It just helps you function when you didn't.†

Does Snake Oil travel well? Will it survive my carry-on?

Yes. Sticks are TSA-friendly and travel ready — sealed, dry powder, no liquid restrictions, no temperature sensitivity. Drop a few in your bag and you're set for the trip. They survive checked luggage, glove compartments, and bachelor-party hotel rooms equally well.

Customer favorite scenarios: international flights (jet lag plus dehydration is exactly what the formula is built for), the morning of a wedding (dress rehearsal-night recovery), weekend bachelor or bachelorette parties (the obvious one), and conference travel where you're stuck on a plane, then in a hotel, then in back-to-back meetings.

One practical note: each stick is roughly the size of a sugar packet. Five sticks fit easily in a Dopp kit or a zip pocket. You don't need to commit a lot of bag space.

Subscription Mechanics

Can I subscribe to a smaller pack size?

Yes. We offer subscriptions in 6-pack ($24/mo), 12-pack ($45/mo), and 20-pack ($67/mo) sizes too, all with free shipping. The 20-pack is the best per-stick value, but if you're not ready for that volume, the smaller sizes are real options. See "Other subscription sizes" on any product page.

How do I cancel or pause my subscription?

Log into your account, go to "Manage Subscription," and you can cancel, pause for a month, skip a shipment, or swap to a different flavor or pack size. No phone calls. No guilt trips. No "are you sure?" screens that hide the cancel button.

Can I change flavors on my subscription?

Yes, anytime. Log in and head to your Member Extras page to swap the flavor for your next shipment, alternate flavors month to month, or switch to Assorted to get all three. Prefer a human? Email us and we’ll take care of it.

Will the subscription price ever go up?

We'll never change your subscription price without emailing you first — and you can cancel anytime, so you're never locked into a change you didn't agree to.

Shipping & Returns

How much is shipping?

Free on all subscription orders, every time. Free on one-time orders $75 and up. For one-time orders under $75, shipping is calculated at checkout based on weight, packaging, and destination — typically $4-8 for most domestic orders.

How quickly will my order arrive?

Orders ship within 1-2 business days from our facility in Tucson, AZ. Domestic transit time is typically 3-5 business days. International orders take longer and vary by country — checkout will show your estimated delivery window.

What's the return policy?

30 days, no questions asked. If you bought Snake Oil and it didn't work for you — wrong flavor, didn't help, just changed your mind — email us within 30 days and we'll refund you. We'd rather have a customer who walks away happy than one who feels stuck with a product they don't want. (We can't accept returns on products that have been mostly used, but if you tried a few sticks and didn't like it, that's still within policy.)

What if it doesn't work for me?

We offer a 30-day return policy on any order, subscription or one-time. If Snake Oil doesn't deliver what we promised, you get your money back. We're confident enough in the formula to take the risk so you don't have to.

The actual mechanics: email us within 30 days of receiving your order. We don't ask for proof, we don't ask for the unused product back, we don't run you through a script. Subscription orders get the same treatment — if your first month doesn't land, you're refunded and unsubscribed in the same email. We'd rather have a customer who walks away happy than one who feels stuck with a product they don't want.

What we'd ask in return: actually try it. Recovery products work or they don't, and one stick on one rough morning is usually enough to know. If you tried it and it didn't deliver, that's the policy. If you bought it and never opened it, that's also the policy. We just ask that the decision is honest.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes — but international shipping is complicated and varies by country. Some places have import restrictions on supplements. Check your country's regulations before ordering, and email us if you're not sure. We'd rather warn you than ship something that gets held at customs.

---

Account & Orders

How do I track my order?

You'll get an email with tracking info as soon as your order ships. You can also log into your account and view order status under "My Orders."

I never got a confirmation email — what happened?

Check your spam folder first (especially if you have a Gmail address — promotional emails sometimes land there). If you still don't see it, email us with the email address you used and we'll look you up.

I think I ordered the wrong thing. Can I change my order?

If your order hasn't shipped yet (usually within 12 hours of ordering), email us immediately and we can update it. Once it's shipped, we can't change it, but we can talk through return options if it's the wrong product.

About the Brand

Why is it called Snake Oil?

Two reasons. First, we have a sense of humor about the supplement industry — most of what's on the shelf today is the same scam in different packaging, and calling our product Snake Oil is our way of acknowledging the category we're walking into. Second, the only way to fight the snake oil reputation is to actually deliver. If we make a product worth your time, the name becomes a joke we get to be in on.

Who makes Snake Oil?

Two guys in Tucson, AZ — Jeff is a lawyer, John is a chemist. They spent two years formulating the product because they couldn't find a recovery drink that actually worked for them. The full founder story is on the About page if you want it.

Where is Snake Oil made?

Snake Oil is formulated in Tucson, AZ, and produced in a facility that follows current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) — the FDA-recognized standard for dietary supplements. Every batch is third-party tested for quality and consistency.†

Wholesale & Bulk

Can I sell Snake Oil at my bar, gym, hotel, or retail store?

Possibly — we work with select retailers, distributors, and venues, but our wholesale program is currently invitation-only. We're being careful about expanding distribution so we can support the partners we already have. If you want to be considered, email us through the wholesale inquiry page and we'll get back to you.

Do you offer bulk pricing for events or corporate orders?

Yes. If you're planning an event (wedding, conference, retreat, corporate gift program, race) and want to order more than 100 sticks, email us at wholesale@snakeoilworks.com and we'll work out custom pricing. Lead time is usually 2-3 weeks for large orders.
