Sodium content, and almost nothing else. The best electrolyte powder is the one with a few hundred milligrams of sodium per serving, a little carbohydrate alongside it, and a label that tells you the amounts. Most of what the category competes on — trace mineral counts, exotic additions, the word "advanced" — makes no measurable difference to whether you rehydrate.
Here is how to read a label, when you actually need one, and where ours sits on the same test.
When you need an electrolyte powder, and when water is fine
Start here, because the honest answer saves most people money.
For an ordinary hour in the gym, in air conditioning, water is fine. You will not meaningfully deplete yourself, and a powder is a flavour preference rather than a physiological need.
You have a real case for one when the losses are real:
- Sessions past about an hour, particularly in heat.
- Heavy or salty sweaters. If your kit dries with white crust on it, you are losing more sodium than average — and the between-person variation here is large enough that general advice fails at the edges.
- Long days rather than hard hours — hiking, cycling, a tournament, a festival, a day on the water. Duration and heat do more than intensity.
- After a night of drinking, when fluid and minerals have gone out the same door.
- Anyone told to increase fluid and salt intake by a clinician, for reasons that have nothing to do with sport.
If none of those describe you, the correct electrolyte powder is no electrolyte powder.
The one number that matters: sodium
Sodium is the electrolyte that governs whether fluid stays in you. Everything else on the panel is real but secondary.
This is where most of the category quietly fails. A great many powders lead with potassium, magnesium and a long tail of trace minerals while carrying a modest amount of the one mineral you lose most of. It photographs well and it under-delivers.
Look for a few hundred milligrams per serving. If a label buries sodium or reports it only as a percentage of daily value, that is itself the answer.
Sodium works better with a little sugar, which is awkward for the category
The marketing instinct of the last five years has been to strip carbohydrate out. The research points the other way.
Work using the Beverage Hydration Index — a measure of how much of a drink your body actually holds onto compared with water — found minerals by themselves were not reliably better than water. What moved the number was sodium together with carbohydrate.
There is a reason medical rehydration formulas have always contained a small amount of sugar, and it is not palatability. Sodium and glucose are absorbed together in the gut, and water follows them. Take the glucose out and you have removed half of a two-part mechanism.
For anyone training, this cuts against a reflex. Zero-sugar is a legitimate choice and a real cost — we weigh it properly in the sugar-free article. Five grams of carbohydrate is not a meaningful caloric event in a two-hour ride; treating it as contamination is a habit imported from a different category. If you avoid it for medical reasons or because you are chasing a specific metabolic protocol, that is your call to make with the mechanism in front of you.
Why this matters for performance
Not vaguely. Measurably.
A meta-analysis of 28 studies in Sports Medicine found hypohydration reduced muscle endurance by around 8% and strength by around 5%. Vertical jump was essentially unaffected, and trained people were more resistant — so the honest version is that dehydration costs you endurance and strength specifically, not every quality at once.
That is a real effect at a scale worth planning around, and it is the strongest evidence in this entire subject.
The six-point label test
- Sodium in milligrams. Hundreds, not tens. Findable on the front or the panel.
- Some carbohydrate, unless you have a reason to avoid it.
- Amounts, not a blend. A proprietary blend tells you an ingredient is present, not whether there is enough of it to matter.
- Caffeine — present or not, and how much. It decides when you can take it, not whether it works.
- A serving size you will actually mix. A powder requiring 32 ounces is a powder you will skip on a trail.
- Claims about supporting a function, not treating a condition. A product promising to cure, prevent or detox anything is making a claim its maker cannot substantiate.
What you can safely ignore
Trace mineral counts. Twenty minerals in trace amounts is packaging, not physiology.
"Advanced", "clinical", "optimized." None of these words have definitions.
Exotic additions with thin evidence. Some are pleasant, some are plausible, few are demonstrated. Ask what the evidence is for the outcome you want, not for the ingredient in general.
Being the most expensive. Sodium is cheap. You are usually paying for flavour, format and marketing, all of which are legitimate things to pay for — just know that is what you are buying.

Sodium: 370mg per stick. That is a genuinely strong number and it is the reason to consider us at all. Carbohydrate: 5g. So the pairing the research actually supports — sodium plus carbohydrate — is present in the form the research points at. Also declared with amounts: potassium 95mg, magnesium 30mg, zinc 12mg, vitamin C 200mg, and the complete B lineup with vitamin E.
And we have a proprietary blend. 12.8g of it, glutamine-led, also carrying the botanical extracts and 100mg of caffeine. The blend names every ingredient, as the regulations require, but not the individual amounts — so by criterion 3 above, our label is less transparent than it could be. We would rather say that than have you notice it.†
One stick in 16 ounces of water. The caffeine is roughly a cup of coffee, which decides when you take it rather than whether it works.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best electrolyte powder? The one with a few hundred milligrams of sodium, some carbohydrate, a readable label, and a flavour you will actually drink. Past those, the differences between reputable products are far smaller than the marketing implies.
Do I need electrolytes for a one-hour workout? Usually not. Water covers an ordinary hour indoors. The case grows with heat, duration, and how salty a sweater you are.
Is a sugar-free electrolyte powder better? Not for rehydration. Sodium and glucose are absorbed together and water follows them, so stripping the carbohydrate takes out half of a two-part mechanism. It is a reasonable choice for other reasons, but it is not the better rehydration product.
Should I take electrolytes before or after exercise? Before and during for anything long or hot, since you are replacing as you go rather than catching up. Afterwards is useful when the session was genuinely depleting.
Are electrolyte powders better than sports drinks? Same principle, different packaging and usually a different sugar load. Will electrolytes stop muscle cramps? The link between dehydration, electrolytes and cramping is far less settled than the marketing suggests. Some people find it helps; the evidence does not support promising it.
