Look for one with real sodium in it — a few hundred milligrams, not a token pinch — paired with a little carbohydrate. That pairing is the one with actual research behind it. Then check how much of the label is disclosed in amounts and how much disappears into a blend, and check the caffeine so you can match it to when you plan to drink.

What you should not look for is a drink that promises to fix the morning. None of them do, including ours, and the rest of this explains why the honest version is still worth buying.

First, what an electrolyte drink can actually do

It replaces minerals you measurably lost. That is the whole mechanism, and it is a real one.

Alcohol switches off the hormonal signal that keeps your kidneys holding water, so more of it leaves than otherwise would — and whatever was dissolved in it leaves too. Sodium, potassium and magnesium are the three worth caring about. (The mechanism in full.)

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge in solution. Nerve signalling, muscle contraction and fluid balance all run on them.

Replacing them is worth doing. It is also narrower than the category implies, and the gap between those two facts is where most of the marketing lives.

The single most important thing on the label: sodium

Here is the part almost nobody tells you, because it complicates the sell.

Electrolytes on their own do not reliably beat plain water. In Beverage Hydration Index research, adding electrolytes alone did not consistently improve fluid retention over water. The advantage showed up when sodium was paired with carbohydrate.

That pairing is the actual principle behind oral rehydration solutions, and it is why they are faintly salty and slightly sweet rather than pure salt water. Sodium is what lets fluid stay where you put it; a little carbohydrate helps it get there.

So: a drink with a meaningful amount of sodium beats a drink built around potassium and a long list of trace minerals, whatever the front of the sachet says.

What to check, in order

  1. Sodium, in milligrams, on the label. Hundreds, not tens. If you cannot find the number, that is the answer.
  2. A little carbohydrate. Zero-sugar is a fine choice for other reasons, but understand you are giving up the retention advantage the research actually found.
  3. Named amounts, not a "proprietary blend." A blend tells you the ingredients are present. It does not tell you whether they are present in a quantity that does anything. We should say plainly that our own label has one — a 12.8g blend covering the amino acids, the botanical extracts and the caffeine. The declared minerals and vitamins carry amounts; the blend does not. Ask us the same question you would ask anyone else, and weigh the answer accordingly.
  4. Caffeine — find out whether it is in there, then match it to your own tolerance. A lot of recovery drinks contain it and plenty do not flag it on the front. Ours does contain caffeine. After a heavy night most people find a modest dose is swamped by how tired they already are; if you are caffeine-sensitive, make it a morning drink. The point is that you should be able to find out either way before you buy.
  5. A serving size you will actually use. A powder you have to mix into 32 ounces at midnight is a powder you will skip.
  6. Claims that describe support rather than treatment. A product promising to cure or prevent a hangover is making a claim its maker cannot substantiate — and, as the FDA has made clear, one it is not allowed to make.

What does not matter as much as the label suggests

A long ingredient list. Twenty trace minerals in trace amounts is a design choice aimed at the back of the pack, not at you.

Long ingredient lists in general — including ours. A 2022 review in Addiction examined 21 placebo-controlled trials of vitamins, amino acids and botanical extracts for hangover symptoms and rated the evidence very low quality across the board. That covers the category Snake Oil sits in, not just the herbal end of the shelf. Some trials found effects. None were good enough to rely on.

"Clinically studied." Ask what was studied, in how many people, and by whom. A patent is not a study. A trial the manufacturer ran and never published is not a study either.

When to drink it

Before bed, if you can manage it — you are about to go the longest unbroken stretch of your day without drinking anything, and you are entering it already short. Midnight-you is also more capable of finding a glass than 7am-you. (The timing case, in full.)

The morning after still works. You have simply spent the night without.

On caffeine and bedtime, since some recovery drinks contain it and ours does: a modest dose landing on a body that is already heavily sleep-pressured does not interfere for most people. If you are the sort of person who regrets a 4pm coffee, take it in the morning instead. Know what is in it, and know yourself.

The part the category will not tell you

Replacing fluid and minerals does not address most of why you feel bad.

A 2024 review in Alcohol went at the dehydration story directly and found the fluid shortfall after ordinary social drinking modest and quick to pass, with the hangover running on a separate track rather than downstream of it. (The full argument.)

The better-evidenced drivers are an inflammatory response and a degraded night's sleep, the second of which starts costing you at around two drinks. No electrolyte drink touches either one.

So buy one for what it does: replacing what you lost, in a form your body holds onto. That is a real, small, honest benefit. Anything more is being sold to you.

What is the best electrolyte drink for a hangover? The one with real sodium, a little carbohydrate, a transparent label and no caffeine if you are taking it at night. Beyond those criteria the differences between reputable products are much smaller than the marketing suggests.

Are electrolyte drinks better than water after drinking? For minerals, yes. For holding onto fluid, only when sodium arrives with carbohydrate — the mineral list alone does not do it. Neither version reaches the sleep or the inflammation.

Should I drink it before bed or in the morning? Before bed is the better single moment, because it precedes the longest stretch you will go without fluid. If your drink is caffeinated — ours is — and you are sensitive to caffeine, the morning is the sensible swap.

Do I need one at all? No. Water, food and sleep cover most of it. An electrolyte drink is a convenience and a better vehicle for minerals, not a requirement.

Is a sports drink the same thing? Close, in principle — sodium plus carbohydrate is the same idea. Sports drinks are formulated around exercise, so the sugar load is often higher than you need sitting still at midnight.
