Mostly not, and the honest answer is more useful than the marketing one. A few of the ingredients that show up in hangover supplements have real evidence behind them for what they individually do. Almost none of that evidence is about hangovers. And no supplement — ours included — does anything about the two things that most determine how you feel: the sleep you did not get, and the time your liver still needs.
We sell one of these products. We are called Snake Oil. You should read the rest of this with both of those facts in mind.
Why we are the wrong people to ask
We picked the name on purpose. The original snake oil was a real Chinese liniment that plausibly worked; the fraud was a showman named Clark Stanley selling mineral oil under the same label, fined twenty dollars for it once federal investigators tested the bottle. The word survives as a synonym for exactly what this category is accused of. (The full history, including the parts most retellings get wrong.)
So we are not going to tell you the category works. We are going to tell you which parts have evidence, which parts do not, and where ours sits — and you can decide whether the answer sounds like someone selling you something.
What would "works" even mean?
This is where most of the argument goes wrong. "Does it work" collapses three different questions:
- Does the ingredient do the thing it is claimed to do, in general? Often yes.
- Does it do that thing in the context of drinking? Much thinner.
- Does doing that thing measurably change how you feel the next morning? Thinnest of all.
A supplement can pass the first test and fail the third. Most of the confident marketing in this category quietly substitutes evidence for question one as if it answered question three.
The evidence, by ingredient category
Electrolytes — real, modest, and narrower than advertised. Sodium, potassium and magnesium genuinely leave with the fluid you lose. But sodium alone does not reliably beat plain water for fluid retention; the advantage appears when sodium is paired with carbohydrate. That is the principle behind oral rehydration, and it is a real effect. It is not a hangover claim.
B vitamins — supported for chronic heavy drinking, thin for a night out. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements documents that alcohol reduces absorption, storage and activation of thiamine, and that a large majority of people with chronic alcoholism become deficient. That is a serious, well-evidenced finding about alcohol use disorder. It is not evidence that one Saturday depletes your B vitamins, and brands that quietly slide from one to the other are overreaching. We went nutrient by nutrient here.
Amino acids — good evidence for the compound, none for the application. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and demand genuinely outstrips supply under heavy physical stress. There is no evidence alcohol depletes it.
Dihydromyricetin (DHM) — the best mechanism story in the category and the thinnest human evidence. This is the ingredient several competitors are built on, and it is in our blend too, so we have every incentive to oversell it. We are not going to.
The famous paper is Shen et al., 2012, in the Journal of Neuroscience. It found that DHM blunted alcohol's effect on GABA-A receptors and reduced intoxication behaviour. In rats. By injection. That is genuine mechanism work and it says nothing about a person swallowing a sachet — particularly since DHM's oral bioavailability is somewhere around 4%.
A 2026 systematic review in Nutrients counted what exists across alcohol-related conditions: 17 animal studies, 8 in vitro studies, and 2 human trials. And both human trials tested whole Hovenia dulcis extract, of which DHM is less than 1% — so they cannot tell you much about DHM specifically. Those two trials, at 25 and 26 participants, did report modestly lower next-day scores.
So there is no published human randomised trial of isolated DHM on hangover outcomes. Not a weak one. None.
Safety looks reassuring — NIH LiverTox rates it category E, unlikely to cause clinically apparent liver injury — and the preclinical liver and GABA work is genuinely interesting. That is why it is in the formula. It is not there because anyone has shown it works in humans, and if that changes we will say so.
Botanical extracts and antioxidant compounds — mostly small, short, and industry-funded. The trials that exist tend to have few participants, no replication, and a sponsor with an interest in the result. Not nothing. Not a basis for confidence.
Activated charcoal — no. It binds some substances in the gut. Alcohol is absorbed too fast and too completely for it to matter, and it will happily bind medication you actually need.
Caffeine — makes you feel better without making you better. It masks fatigue. Useful if that is what you want; it is not recovery, and it is doing nothing about the underlying deficit.
What regulators have actually done
This is worth knowing before you buy anything in this category.
In July 2020 the FDA sent warning letters to seven companies selling hangover products, on the grounds that they were unapproved new drugs.
The reasoning is worth understanding, because it is more specific than it sounds. Federal law defines a drug as something intended for use in the "cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease." The FDA's position is that alcohol intoxication meets its definition of a disease — so a product claiming to act on the signs and symptoms of a hangover is making a disease claim, and a disease claim turns a supplement into a drug that needs approval it does not have.
That is the line. A supplement may support a normal function of the body. It may not treat a disease.
Separately, the industry's own self-regulatory body — the National Advertising Division — made a competitor withdraw liver-detox claims and testimonials implying a hangover had been eliminated. Notably, that case turned on the brand's social captions and hashtags rather than its product page.
So when you see a product promise to cure, prevent, or detox, you are not looking at a bolder company. You are looking at one that has not been caught yet.
The three things with the most evidence behind them
Unglamorous, free, and better supported than anything on a supplement label:
- Sleep. Pooled trials show the restorative back half of the night degraded from around two drinks upward, and worse from there. No powder touches this. (The full account.)
- Less alcohol. Dose is the single largest variable and always will be.
- Food and fluid, before and during. Slows absorption, supports fluid retention, and costs nothing.
Any product that positions itself ahead of these three is selling you the wrong thing.
So what is Snake Oil for?
What is in it: 370mg sodium, 5g carbohydrate, potassium, magnesium, zinc, a glutamine-led amino acid blend, and the B lineup with vitamins C and E, mixed into 16 ounces of water — support for hydration and replenishment.†
The part we actually stand on is the amino acid foundation and the sodium. Glutamine is the largest single thing in the blend by design, and the sodium-plus-carbohydrate pairing is the one rehydration finding in this whole article with decent evidence behind it. Everything else in the formula is there on a weaker basis, honestly held — which is why you just read four paragraphs about the limits of our own showcase ingredient.
Note the wording on that last phrase, because it is doing deliberate work. It says support for hydration and replenishment, not replaces what you lost — which would be exactly the slide this article criticised four sections ago.
That is a narrow claim, and it is narrow on purpose. It will not shorten sleep debt, it will not speed up your liver, and it is not a reason to drink more. If that sounds thinner than what the rest of the category promises, look again at the label on the box.
Frequently asked questions
Do hangover pills actually work? Some ingredients have real evidence for what they do in general; very little of that evidence is specifically about hangovers. Treat any product promising to cure or prevent one as a claim its maker cannot substantiate.
Is there anything that genuinely prevents a hangover? Drinking less. Everything else is a matter of degree, and no supplement is approved to prevent anything.
Is an electrolyte powder worth it over plain water? For putting minerals back, yes. For holding onto fluid, only if the sodium has carbohydrate with it — that pairing is doing the work, not the mineral list.
Why do these products have a disclaimer if they work? Because supplements are not evaluated by the FDA before sale. The disclaimer tells you the agency has not assessed the claim — it is not a formality, and it is not an endorsement.
How do I tell a decent product from a bad one? Look for a full label with amounts rather than a proprietary blend, claims about supporting a function rather than treating a condition, and citations that lead to published research rather than to the company's own patent.
