Do Hangovers Get Worse With Age? — engraved illustration

They probably don't — and that is not a pep talk, it is what the research says. A study of 761 drinkers found reported hangover severity goes down with age, not up. What changes is how much alcohol the same drink actually puts in you, and how much slack the following day has in it.

Almost every article on this question tells you the opposite. Here is the evidence.

What the research found

A 2021 study in Alcohol and Alcoholism surveyed 761 Dutch drinkers aged 18 to 94. It found a significant negative correlation between age and hangover severity (r = −0.327, p < 0.0001), and a negative correlation with frequency as well.

The obvious objection is that older people simply drink less. The authors tested that, and reported the relationship separately as a partial correlation: "Hangover severity declines with age, even after controlling for eBAC or the amount of alcohol consumed."

A separate 2014 analysis likewise found hangover incidence falling across age groups.

So the measured experience of older drinkers is milder, not worse. Which raises the more interesting question.

Then why does it feel worse?

Four reasons, none of which is "your body has got worse at this."

1. The same drink is a bigger dose than it used to be

This is the real physiological change, and it is well documented. The NIAAA puts it plainly: because of "reduced muscle mass and body water, some older adults may reach higher blood alcohol concentrations than younger people after consuming the same amount of alcohol."

Alcohol distributes through body water. Less body water means the same three drinks arrive at a higher concentration. You have not become worse at handling alcohol. You are handling more of it.

2. You are comparing against a version of yourself who had nothing on

At twenty-two, a rough morning cost you a morning. The same morning at thirty-eight lands on a day that was already full.

The physical experience may be milder. The cost is enormously higher, and that is what memory encodes.

3. You start with less slack

Sleep debt, work stress, training, irregular meals. Recovery from drinking competes with everything else your body is already behind on, and by your thirties the queue is longer.

4. The sleep costs more than it used to

The sleep cost itself has not changed — the back half of the night gets degraded from about two drinks upward, same as it always did. What changed is your capacity to absorb it. At 22 you slept until noon and the debt cleared itself. At 40 there is a 7am that does not negotiate. (What alcohol does to a night's sleep.)

What does not hold up

"Your liver clears alcohol more slowly now." This one needs splitting, because the popular version is wrong and the real version helps.

The rate at which a healthy adult's liver eliminates alcohol does not change much with age — so "your liver has slowed down" is not the explanation. What does change is first-pass metabolism: some alcohol is broken down before it ever reaches your bloodstream, and that share declines with age. The effect is not that you clear alcohol more slowly. It is that more of it arrives in the first place — which is the same dose story as body water, arriving by a second route.

So the honest correction is narrower than a flat denial. Your liver is not failing you. More alcohol is reaching it.

What actually helps

Since the mechanism is dose sensitivity rather than decline, the useful responses follow from that:

  • Recalibrate, do not white-knuckle. If the same amount lands harder, the honest response is a smaller amount, not a better supplement.
  • Protect the sleep, not the morning. Stopping earlier does more than anything you take afterwards.
  • Eat properly beforehand. Slows absorption, which directly addresses the concentration problem.
  • Replace fluid and minerals before bed, while you are still awake to do it — worth doing on its own terms, though the fluid side is a smaller part of the picture than it is usually sold as.
  • Remember what you are comparing against. That version of you had a different body composition and an empty calendar. It is not a fair fight.

At what age do hangovers get worse? On the measured evidence, they do not — reported severity declines with age. What increases is the blood alcohol concentration a given number of drinks produces, and the cost of losing a day.

Why can't I drink like I used to? Mostly because the same drinks now produce a higher blood alcohol concentration, thanks to reduced body water and muscle mass. Less recovery slack and less flexible sleep do the rest.

Does metabolism slow down with age and cause worse hangovers? We found no good support for a meaningful slowdown in alcohol elimination in healthy adults. Body composition is the better-evidenced explanation.

Is it true that women get worse hangovers? Body water differences mean the same drinks generally produce a higher blood alcohol concentration, which is a dose effect rather than a difference in resilience.
