Not meaningfully, no. It is salt water with an unusually good story attached, and the two pieces of research people cite for it are both about something else entirely.
There has never been a controlled trial of pickle juice for hangover. Not a small one, not a bad one. None. Every confident article on this subject — and there are many — is borrowing evidence from a different question and hoping you do not check.
We sell an electrolyte drink, so we have an obvious interest here. Read the rest with that in mind — and notice that the pickle-juice crowd has the right instinct and the wrong bottle.
What is actually in it
A shot of dill pickle brine, the two to three ounces the folk remedy calls for, gives you roughly 300 to 500mg of sodium, depending heavily on the brand.
Scaled up, that is somewhere around 5,000 to 8,000mg of sodium per litre equivalent — several times the concentration of an oral rehydration solution, which sits near 1,725mg per litre. Pickle juice is not a dilute drink. It is very salty water taken in a very small volume.
What it does not contain:
- Meaningful potassium. Commercial dill brine has tens of milligrams, not hundreds. If you have been vomiting, potassium is the one you have most likely lost, and this does not replace it.
- Carbohydrate. Sodium is absorbed alongside glucose, which is why rehydration formulas are slightly sweet. Brine has no glucose to travel with.
- Volume. A shot is a shot. The fluid deficit is not addressed by three ounces of anything.
It does contain acetic acid at roughly 1.5 to 2.5% — it is made from vinegar — which matters for the risks section below.
The two studies that get cited, and why neither applies
The cramp study
This is the real one, and it is genuinely interesting. Miller and colleagues found a small volume of pickle juice measurably shortened an electrically induced muscle cramp compared with water.
The detail that matters here is the timing. Relief landed far too quickly for anything to have been digested, absorbed and distributed — and the researchers confirmed blood chemistry had barely moved. Their explanation is a reflex set off by the sharp taste at the back of the throat, quieting the nerve signal driving the cramp.
That is a reflex acting on motor neurons during an active muscle cramp. There is no proposed pathway — none, not a weak one — by which it would touch a headache, nausea, fatigue or fog. The finding is real and it does not generalise. We covered the cramp question properly here.
The vinegar and blood sugar research
The second borrowed authority. There is a legitimate body of work, including a systematic review and meta-analysis, showing that vinegar blunts the rise in blood glucose after a carbohydrate-containing meal.
Read what that says. It is about slowing carbohydrate absorption when eaten with a meal. A hangover is not a postprandial glucose spike. If anything, the blood-sugar concern the morning after runs in the opposite direction — a night of drinking impairs the liver's ability to make new glucose, particularly if you did not eat. Slowing glucose absorption further is not obviously a thing you want.
Different question, different direction, no trial connecting the two.
So is it doing anything at all?
A little, and only one thing: it is sodium.
You do lose sodium after a night of drinking, through the fluid loss that alcohol's suppression of vasopressin causes. Replacing it is worth doing. A shot of brine replaces some.
But it replaces it in the least efficient available format — high concentration, small volume, no carbohydrate to help absorption, no potassium, and a strong acid load. A pinch of salt in a large glass of water, with something to eat, does the same job more comfortably. So does soup.
If you like the taste and it makes you feel better, that is a real thing and we are not going to argue with it. Just do not credit it with a mechanism it does not have.
Reasons to be careful
The sodium load is genuinely high. A single shot can be a fifth or more of the daily intake commonly recommended as a cap. If you are managing blood pressure, heart failure or kidney function, this is not a trivial amount and it is worth a word with your doctor rather than a word with a blog.
It is acid on an already irritated stomach. Alcohol increases gastric acid and inflames the stomach lining, which is part of why you feel sick. Tipping vinegar brine onto that is untested, and the physiology does not obviously favour it. Anecdotally plenty of people find it settles them; anecdotally plenty find the opposite.
Repeated acid exposure is not kind to tooth enamel, which matters only if this becomes a habit.
What to drink instead
The idea behind pickle juice is right: you lost sodium, put it back. The execution is what fails. Here is what does the same job properly:
- An electrolyte mix with real sodium and a little carbohydrate. The brine idea, done correctly — sodium in a volume you can absorb, with the glucose it needs to travel, without the acid. Ours is one; the criteria for judging any of them are here.
- Broth or soup. Fluid, 700–900mg of sodium a cup, warm, and it goes down when nothing else will.
- An oral rehydration solution. The clinical benchmark. Works; tastes like it.
- A glass of water with salted food. Free, and closer to the brine shot than the brine shot is.

Frequently asked questions
Does pickle juice help a hangover? There is no trial evidence that it does. It supplies sodium, which is worth replacing, in an unusually harsh format. Salt in water and a bowl of soup do the same job better.
How much pickle juice should I drink for a hangover? There is no evidence-based dose because there is no evidence. If you are going to, keep it small — the sodium adds up fast and the acid is hard on an unsettled stomach.
Does pickle juice cure a hangover? No. Nothing does, and pickle juice is not a near miss.
Is pickle juice better than a sports drink? Different problem. Brine is much saltier and much smaller in volume; a sports drink is more dilute and gives you fluid. Neither is close to an oral rehydration solution.
Does pickle juice help with nausea? No evidence, and a plausible reason to think acid on an irritated stomach makes it worse. Ginger has better support, though not from hangover trials specifically.
Why do people say it works? Because it is salty, because a strong taste is briefly distracting, and because the cramp research gets repeated in contexts it does not apply to.
